Jewish charities in the UK have raised thousands of pounds to support Syrians fleeing the country’s civil war.
World Jewish Relief, which launched its emergency appeal two weeks ago, has raised £100,000 for refugees in Jordan’s Za’atari camp. The money, from individuals, businesses and a £50,000 donation secured last week from the Pears Foundation, has allowed WJR to supply food and aid parcels to thousands of refugees.
WJR chief executive Paul Anticoni said: “Supporters have enabled the Jewish community’s response to be rapid, practical and make a difference to those fleeing the conflict. Our appeal is ongoing and we hope we can continue to scale up our assistance.”
Magen David Adom UK, a member of the International Red Cross, has shipped over £320,000 worth of medical supplies to Jordan. Chief executive Daniel Burger said: “We have managed to ship the medicine, which was donated by an Israeli pharmaceutical company, with the help of a handful of high net-worth donors. The money has not come from our general pot.”
A spokesperson for Shaare Zedek UK, which backs the Shaare Zedek Medical Centre in Jerusalem, said the hospital had been supporting Syrians in need of medical treatment.
