The UK faces an increased risk of an Iran-backed terrorist attack following the Hamas incursion on Israel, the MI5 spy agency chief has warned.

Director general Ken McCallum said the UK intelligence services were particularly focused on the Middle Eastern nation amid concerns they may be emboldened by Hamas’ attack on southern Israel earlier this month.

He said: “We have obviously been concerned about Iran's behaviour in the UK for a long time.

“In particular, the past 18 months or so have been a particularly intensive phase of Iran-generated threat on UK soil. Plainly, events in the Middle East sharpen the possibility that Iran might decide to move into new directions.
