The British Charedi rabbi who became a star of Israel’s Master Chef TV show has left the competition — but found himself a wife.
Wacky recipes from Rabbi Josh Steele, 29, who made aliyah from Edgware, north London, won over 400 shidduch offers during nine weeks on the show.
But his heart was set on New Yorker Elana Mittel who was on holiday. Producers refused to let him leave the country during filming to ask her parents’ permission to marry her.
But after losing his place by failing to produce a schwarma, he made the trip and proposed by posting a message on the 215ft Hershey’s chocolate sign in Times Square. He says of Elana: “She is every Jewish mother’s dream. She’s a doctor. So the rabbi can cook and the doctor can play basketball — it’s like reverse roles.”
His exit from the show came when he did not understand cooking instructions in Hebrew. To make matters worse, his dish fell off the grill during cooking. “I’ve never made tehina before — I’m English,” he said.
But as a result of his appearances on Masterchef, Rabbi Steele has already been offered chef jobs with two top Israeli hotels and four investors are vying to open a restaurant with him.
