It is not every day you get to reminisce with a football legend, but Jewish brothers Ben and Gabe Turner have been able to do exactly that — only not with just one legend, but with six.

The Turners have directed the film, The Class of ’92, which tells the personal stories of David Beckham, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt and the Neville brothers, Gary and Phil — tracing their development from 12-year-old schoolboys in Manchester United’s youth academy, to international superstars.

The brothers, former members of the Bnei Akiva youth group, may be Londoners who support Sunderland but they jumped at the chance of making the film.

“It was an amazing opportunity. We were desperate to do it,” said Ben.

They spent hours interviewing and filming the players — David Beckham, they found, was “a complete mensch” who treated everyone from the “runner, up to the top producer” in the same way. Paul Scholes, known as a retiring figure, was revealed as “a bit of rascal”.

The film, which is released in cinemas on Sunday and on DVD next week, is produced by the Turners’ cousin, Leo Pearlman — making it a family affair.

“That was important to us,” said Ben.
