It may not be the largest service taking place during ShabbatUK, but it is almost certainly the highest.

Rabbi Ari Shainfeld is planning to lead Shabbat prayers at 19,000 feet on top of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Rabbi Shainfeld, who is associate rabbi at St John's Wood Synagogue in north-west London, will be part of an international group of 30, including eight from the UK, climbing the mountain in Tanzania in aid of the special needs charity Shalva.

He says he is excited about taking on the "extra challenge" of holding a Shabbat service at high altitude.

Many of the climbers are not Shabbat observant but, said Rabbi Shainfeld, they have signed up to take part. "This will be totally out of the ordinary, a Shabbat we will never forget," he said.
