Death metal, a subgenre of heavy metal, is known for its aggressive vocals and occasional nods to the occult. Surely its hellraising fans reserve Friday nights for raucous head-banging?

Not if you ask Skarthia, the four-piece from north London, who started their thrash band almost 10 years ago at Hasmonean High School.

Orthodox members Avichai Myers, Adam Gigi and Sapir Rajuan, and non-Jewish rocker Wayne Thompson, have won the "Metal 2 The Masses" competition, and with it a spot in front of 20,000 people at the Bloodstock festival in August.

Luckily, the organisers were "very understanding" when they switched their gig from Friday to Sunday, so as not to interfere with Shabbat.
