The Advertising Standards Authority provoked a storm of protests when it ruled an Israeli tourist ad could not display the Western Wall. But should another watchdog, the Press Complaints Commission, expect a knock on the door from the Board of Deputies, too?
The PCC this week rejected a complaint from Geoffrey Alderman against a Sunday Times sub-headline, which he argued wrongly implied that Tel Aviv was Israel's seat of government.
Sitting on the diplomatic fence, the PCC stated that whether "Tel Aviv or Jerusalem was the capital of Israel was a contentious matter on which it was not in a position to come to a definitive view".
The Foreign Office website notes that the international community does not recognise Israel's claim of Jerusalem as its capital and that the UK embassy is located in Tel Aviv.
