Education Secretary Nicky Morgan has reiterated the need to teach the Israeli-Palestine conflict in a balanced way following a meeting with the Board of Deputies.

Board president Jonathan Arkush and chief executive Gillian Merron raised the subject yesterday, as well as discussing the contribution of faith schools and tackling antisemitic, Islamophobic and homophobic bullying in schools.

Mrs Morgan said that the Board “raised concerns about unbalanced teaching in schools, including of the Israel-Palestine conflict. Our position is clear – we actively encourage debate in schools, but different viewpoints need to be presented in an unbiased and balanced way.”

Mr Arkush said that the Education Secretary “ clearly shares many of our community’s interests and concerns. I look forward to continuing the strong and effective relationship between the Board and the Department during my presidency.”
