Islington’s Chabad rabbi is calling on the local community to rally round for a Chanukah lighting at 6.30 this evening on Islington Green in a show of solidarity after their chanukiah was serverely damaged in a suspected antisemitic attack.
Writing on Twitter/X alongside a photo of the chanukiah, Rabbi Mendy Korer said: “I’m sorry to share that the Menorah on Islington Green has been severely damaged. The ugly face of hate. I guess not everyone enjoys light and joy.”
He later invited followers to join his community and Islington Council on Islington Green to light for the eighth – and final night – of Chanukah “to make a strong statement that the menorah lights will never be extinguished and that hate will not be tolerated.”
The chanukiah was the second to be vandalised in a day, with West Hampstead Chabad’s menorah also severely damaged.
The police confirmed that they were treating both incidents as deliberate.
