The editor of a satirical news website has apologised for "a regrettable lapse in judgment" after the publication of an article joking about plans to introduce gas chambers into British care homes.

The piece, titled Gas chambers in care homes '"nothing to worry about" says Southern Cross, has also been removed from the Square Mile site.

An apology has also been posted on the homepage.

"We regret deeply that the story caused offence and we apologise unreservedly for any offence caused," said editor Martin Deeson.
