Sir Mick Davis has strengthened his grip on the Jewish Leadership Council after being elected unopposed as chairman of its membership council.

The former UJIA leader has led the JLC as chairman of its trustee board over the past six years.

Sir Mick will now combine that role with chairing the quarterly meetings of the full council after being the only candidate to receive at least two nominations.

The membership council had been chaired by the then president of the Board of Deputies Vivian Wineman.

But Mr Wineman’s successor Jonathan Arkush opted not to stand for the position – although Mr Arkush automatically has a seat on the JLC’s trustee board.

When the JLC was formed in 2003, it was led by the then president of the Board of Deputies Henry Grunwald, who was its founding chairman.

The JLC is also reviewing the composition of its advisory body of vice-presidents after the expiry of their three-year term.

Its 10 VPs include Lord Janner, who was charged last month with historical child abuse, although his picture does not appear on the JLC’s website.

The JLC is writing to them to ask if they wish to be considered for a further term of office.

One of the vice-presidents is Board of Deputies chief executive Gillian Merron, although a Board spokesman said that no decision had been taken about whether she would seek to remain on the JLC.
