A Shomrim volunteer was "viciously assaulted" in Stamford Hill in what the strictly Orthodox neighbourhood watch group says the first attack ever against a volunteer.
The man, who is believed to be in his twenties, was hospitalised after suffering injuries to his face while he was responding to a call about criminal damage on Tuesday evening.
Shomrim shared a close-up photo of the victim that showed him with a bloodied eye.
Chaim Hochhauser, a volunteer for Shomrim, said the incident was the first attack against a volunteer since the group was established in 2008.
He said: “Out of nowhere, he punched him in his eye and ran off into the park. The family were quite upset. It’s first time we have had an attack.”
Police were called to Spring Hill Road in Clapton, north London, at around 8.30pm on Tuesday to reports a man had been assaulted.
According to Shomrim, the volunteer was responding to an incident involving criminal damage to two vans.
Anyone with information about the incident can contact the Metropolitan Police on 101 with the crime reference number Cad 7298 12/02/2019.
