Jonathan Arkush, the Board of Deputies president, has welcomed Sadiq Khan’s decision to join the Mayors United Against Antisemitism initiative.
The pledge, which Mr Khan’s predecessor Boris Johnson also signed, has attracted support from 150 mayors in 30 countries across Europe, as well as representatives in all 50 US states.
Mr Arkush said that “taken together with his attendance at the Yom HaShoah Holocaust commemoration event, this sets a very positive tone that we hope will be replicated throughout his mayoralty.”
Having signed the American Jewish Committee’s pledge less than a month after taking office, Mr Khan said he was “proud” to join the campaign, and was planning to “encourage other mayors across the country and Europe to do the same”.
He added that “antisemitism is totally unacceptable and can never be justified,” explaining that his personal experience had made him aware of the challenges faced by minorities.
“As a British Muslim, I am no stranger to discrimination and prejudice,” he said.
