Rap star Chimpmunk performs at barmitzvah

articlemain

British rap star Chipmunk attended his first barmitzvah last week, performing by special request at celebrations for 13-year-old Joseph Port from Leeds.

X-Factor's Lloyd Daniels also made up the hour-long music set with each artist performing six songs for 200 guests at the barmitzvah celebrations at Etz Chaim synagogue in Alwoodley on Sunday.

Joseph's parents Mandy and Martin Port wanted to give an extra "feel-good-factor" to Joseph, who has learning difficulties and has been temporarily wheelchair-bound for a year following a serious leg injury. Joseph was supported to the bimah but managed to read his barmitzvah portion standing in Beth Hamidrash Hagadol Synagogue in Alwoodley.

"He loves 'Oopsy Daisy', one of Chipmunk's songs," said his mother. "I really wanted give him a treat. I felt Joseph had a very, very, difficult year and had to cope with more than most other 12-year-olds. I felt Joseph should have a wonderful simchah."

Joseph's friends went home with T-shirts autographed by both musicians and two of Leeds United's most famous former players, Alan Clarke and Paul Reaney, who were also present.
