A state-aided Orthodox primary school which devotes half its week to Jewish studies has been commended by Ofsted for the quality of its secular education.

The Avigdor Hirsch Torah Temimah School in Dollis Hill, north-west London was "alert to the importance" of a broad and balanced curriculum.

Lessons were characterised by good teaching "enriched" with cross-curricular links and teachers "routinely apply Jewish studies to topics in history, geography and science".

The school, which was formally ranked good at its previous inspection nearly five years ago, received only a short, one-day visit this autumn.

Amanda Carter-Fraser, the inspector, noted it had strengthened its leadership team and "substantially" developed its early-years programme.

Pupils gained knowledge of other faiths and cultures and members of its school council met children from another school.
