Gary Clueit also questioned whether Hamas kidnapped babies and suggested he enjoyed being called antisemitic
March 10, 2025 12:16A businessman who dismissed antisemitism as “meaningless”, questioned the number of Jews murdered in the Holocaust and cast doubt on Hamas atrocities has been handed a seat in the Legislative Council of the Parliament – or Tynwald – on the Isle of Man.
Gary Clueit's appointment to the island’s upper chamber on March 4 has sparked outrage, with Manx Jewish community member Michael Josem condemning the Member of the House of Keys (MHKs) who nominated Clueit as “incapable of the judgement required for Tynwald.”
The JC has seen a dossier of evidence about Clueit that was sent to MHKs by Josem before they selected the Legislative Council.
Josen wrote: “Mr Gary Clueit has been associated with the Twitter/X account ‘GClueit’. This account was created in August 2018 and was used to make public statements relating to Mr Clueit’s previous unsuccessful Legislative Council candidacy.
“This research note details many hateful and offensive statements made from the GClueit account.” He asked MHKs to consider if Clueit was a “suitable candidate to serve in our nation’s legislature.”
Ahead of the official swearing in of the new Legislative Council on Tuesday, Josem called for an investigation into Clueit’s posts. He told the JC: "These comments are very concerning, and we want a comprehensive, independent and public investigation into this. The Isle of Man cannot become the Isle of Hate."
Clueit – who moved to the Isle of Man in 2019 – ridiculed the fight against antisemitism, writing in January 2025: “’Antisemitic’ has been rendered meaningless. It's like pissing into the wind. That warm feeling it gives you is just the piss running down your leg.”
Even more disturbingly, the new Tynwald member cast doubt on the scale of the Holocaust, writing: “I may question some of the numbers and I deeply mourn the lack of wide acknowledgement (or even knowledge) of all its other victims... It was a dark stain on humanity. As was the Nakba and what has been allowed to follow.”
In another post, he said: “The Jewish wealthy are still pursuing items stolen by the Nazis nearly 80 years ago. Another useful precedent. They endorse zero statute of limitations on claims of theft.”
In response to a question, “Is there a difference between the ‘master race’ and the ‘chosen people’?” Cluiet wrote: “No. In both cases its a delusion brought about by a mental illness” [sic].
Clueit described Israel as “an extremely sick society” afflicted with “bloodlust”.
He waded into conspiracy theories about Jewish influence, replying to a post that accused Zionists of controlling banking, media, and film, writing approvingly that the “spread” of Zionism “stopped on or around Oct 10”. “There is hope,” he said.
In another post, he suggested that governments which support Israel are paid for by the Jewish state: “Always follow the money. The politicians are bought and paid for. They are now earning those donations. They work for a foreign government.” He claimed, “Zionists control the US body politic and media. They don't give a toss about Jews.”
He took aim at the Jewish owner of adult content platform PornHub, writing “Epstein Island for plebs? A giant data gathering entity that will undoubtedly come in useful at some point.”
All of the posts on Clueit’s X profile highlighted by concerned locals were shared after Hamas’s onslaught into southern Israel on October 7 2023. In one post from October 9, he wrote: “Almost all casualties are former Brooklyn, Moscow & other immigrants who murdered, terrorised & stole Palestinian lands to settle. It wouldn't matter what their colour, creed or religion - they are invaders & treated accordingly. Sadly, civilians are always victims of conflict.”
In another post, he suggested “arming Palestinians”. “When you recognise a state and that state is perceived to be in peril, then perhaps there is an imperative to provide that state with the wherewithal to adequately defend itself from invasion and occupation. And to take the fight deep into the enemy's own territory,” Clueit posted.
After several of his posts were uncovered, Clueit locked his X account, which features Palestinian and Lebanese flag emojis in its biography. After going private, he appeared to endorse the statement: “I enjoy being called antisemite since it has no meaning anymore,” commenting, “They have rendered it a meaningless epithet. #OwnGoal.”
Clueit was proposed by MHK David Ashford, and supported by Lawrie Hooper, Alex Allinson and Michelle Haywood, securing him a term in the upper chamber of Tynwald until 2030 – despite his long history of inflammatory social media posts.
The Isle of Man – which has a population of 84,000 people – is home to a small Jewish community of around 200 people without a synagogue or rabbi.
Clueit did not respond to the JC’s request for comment, nor did the MHKs who supported his bid for the Tynwald.
