The impact on Holocaust education of there being no living survivors will be enormous and hasn’t been fully understood or appreciated, Lord Pickles has cautioned.

In a wide-ranging interview with the JC, his first since announcing his departure from his role as government Special Envoy for post-Holocaust Issues the former cabinet member, who isn’t Jewish, also defended the location of the Holocaust Memorial and Learning Centre next to Parliament and criticised those who object to it on security grounds.

“I was entering my tenth year, that was a good time to step down”, Pickles said, on his decision to leave his post.

A highlight of his tenure was as chair of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) during the UK’s presidency of the organisation between 2024-25.
