Lord John Mann speaks in the House of Lords

Lord John Mann has been reappointed as an independent government adviser on antisemitism.

Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner said on social media that she was “pleased” that Lord Mann would continue in his role.

She posted on X/Twitter, “Antisemitism, Islamophobia & all forms of religious & racial hatred are completely unacceptable. We will be exploring a more integrated and cohesive approach to tackling it.”

Lord Mann told the JC, “It is not the time to ease up on the work tackling antisemitism, so I am back at my desk working hard already. As long as the community thinks I can contribute then I will continue to do so.
In particular the bullying and intimidation of individuals at work is an issue that obviously people don’t want to publicise, but is a top priority to address.”

Before being appointed as an independent adviser to the government by then Prime Minister Theresa May in 2019, he was a Labour MP for Bassetlaw in the East Midlands between 2001-2019.

He stood down as an MP before the 2019 general election and told the JC at the time, "I'm not prepared to stand as an MP with Corbyn as leader."

Mann, who also served as the chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group Against Antisemitism, was a critic of Jeremy Corbyn throughout his leadership of the Labour Party.

In 2016 he called former mayor of London Ken Livingstone a “Nazi apologist” after Livingstone suggested Hitler was a Zionist "before he went mad”.

Mann was appointed to the House of Lords in 2019 and sat without any party affiliation but re-took the Labour whip in May this year.

His wife, Jo White, was recently elected as the new Labour MP for Bassetlaw, which she took off the Conservatives’ Brendan Clarke-Smith.
