The Labour Party has selected a Jewish candidate for a marginal Suffolk seat in the upcoming general election, Bury St Edmonds and Stowmarket.

NHS surgeon Peter Prinsley has been selected as Labour’s candidate for the Suffolk seat.

The Norwich Synagogue goer, 66, told the JC “I’m a proud member of the Jewish Labour Movement and GMB and am looking forward to working hard to get this seat won and begin the task of repairing the country.”

“The challenges faced by the local community after 14 years of a disastrous Tory government are obvious.

“Only Labour will deliver the change that Bury St Edmunds and Stowmarket needs: getting the NHS back on its feet, economic security, educational opportunity and tackling crime and anti-social behaviour.”

The seat has been held by Conservative MP Jo Churchill since 2015 and yesterday she became the third Suffolk MP to announce they would not stand for re-election on July 4.

The constituency has seen major boundary changes and current polls predict that it will swing Labour and polling aggregator Electoral Calculus has Prinsley’s chance of winning the seat at 63 per cent.

Labour is also fielding Jewish candidates in several London seats.

David Pinto-Duschinsky is standing in Hendon which is a predicted Labour win, as is Finchley and Golders Green with Sarah Sackman and Chelsea and Fulham with Ben Coleman.

Tom Grey is standing in Brighton Pavilion and Matthew Patrick is hoping to win Wirral West.

Labour’s sitting Jewish MPs will be fighting to keep their seats, with Damien Egan in Bristol North East, Fabian Hamilton in Leeds North East, Alex Sobell in Leeds North West, Charlotte Nicholls in Warrington North and Ed Miliband in Doncaster North.
