In a letter, the former Attorney General confirmed that she left her position as home secretary in an in-person meeting with the Prime Minister after accidentally sending an official document from a personal email.
Mr Shapps joins the ranks of several other British Jews to serve as Home Secretary, after previously serving as Transport Secretary under Boris Johnson and Tory party chairman under David Cameron, before being fired after allegations of him using alter egos to shape his online image.
The last Jew to hold the role was Former Conservative leader Michael Howard who served as Home Secretary from 1993 to 1997 under Prime Minister John Major.
Leon Brittan, the son of a Lithuanian-Jewish doctor and his wife, was also appointed Home Secretary by Magaret Thatcher in 1983, before being made trade and industry secretary in 1985, resigning in 1986 over the Westland affair.
Frank Soskice, a descendant of Russian Jewish merchants, was made Home Secretary by Harold Wilson in 1964. In 1965 he was relieved of his duties as Home Secretary after suffering from poor health and accepting controversial amendments to the Race Relations Act of 1965.
Shapps, a former BBYO president, told the JC in a 2010 interview, that he was "totally Jewish" saying: "I don't eat pork, we only buy kosher meat and we don't mix meat and milk. I like being Jewish and I married a Jewish girl. It's like a way of life and it's good to be able to instil some of that sense of being in your kids."
