Faiza Shaheen, who last week was de-selected as Labour’s candidate for the target seat of Chingford and Woodford Green, announced today that she had resigned from the party.
She posted on X that following confirmation of her removal as a candidate by the Labour Party’s governing body, the National Executive Committee (NEC), earlier today she could not “in all conscience, continue to contribute to a party that seems to think so little of people like me and has moved so far away from my values.”
She claimed that she had “been prevented from speaking out on issues that really matter to me, including on public sector wages and Palestine” and that her removal “shows that the desires of local members and my community mean nothing to the people at the top of the party.”
Shaheen refused to rule out standing as an independent, saying she would consider her next steps and “make an announcement tomorrow.”
The left-wing economist stood against former Conservative Party leader Iain Duncan Smith for the Labour Party in Chingford and Woodford Green at the 2019 General Election. She was removed as the official candidate for reasons including anti-Israel social media activity. It was reported that the Jewish Labour Movement (JLM) had raised concerns about her suitability as a candidate.
Earlier today, Mish Rahman, a left-wing member of Labour’s NEC confirmed that the party had “approved the list of candidates for the next General Election” but attacked his party’s leadership over what he called “the lack of respect shown to Black and Asian women and the likes of Diane Abbott and Faiza Shaheen.”
Shaheen was replaced as Labour’s candidate by Shama Tatler, a councillor in the London Borough of Brent and member of the Jewish Labour Movement.
This weekend, the Labour Party’s offices in Chingford and Woodford Green were vandalized and sprayed with graffiti that said “Isreal [sic] lobby out” and “UK MPs for UK Not Israel”. Tatler described the incident as “shameful vandalism” that was “not just an attack on our campaign - it's an attack on our whole community.”
