Sir Stephen Sherbourne will take up his seat in House of Lords in October after a longstanding political career in Westminster and public affairs.

The newly-created peer, who will sit on the Tory benches, served as Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher’s political secretary and chief of staff to Conservative leader Sir Michael Howard.

Sir Stephen is a non-executive director of Smithfields Consultants, which specialises in corporate communcations.

Now based in London, he was born in Manchester and is a former member of the city’s Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue.

He is one of 30 new peers named by Downing Street earlier this month.
