October 30, 2008 12:38A leading member of the Hull community, Curtis Marks was honorary treasurer of the Hull Old Hebrew Congregation from 1980-85, then vice-chairman from 1986 until its amalgamation with the Western Synagogue in 1994, as well as being a trustee.
He was born in Hull, one of eight children of Jack and Miriam Marks. In 1939 he went to visit his father, then living in Belgium, and escaped on the last boat to leave before the outbreak of the Second World War.
Despite enlisting in the British Army, he served most of the war as a staff chauffeur in the US army.
In September 1943 he married Minnie Levitsky of Liverpool. After the war he established, with his wife and brother, Maurice, a successful chain of drapery shops, called Marks and Marks, in Hull.
He started his communal involvement as chairman of the burial board from 1964-75. An observant Jew, he regularly attended services until a year before his death.
Predeceased by his elder son only seven weeks before his own death, he is survived by his wife, son, daughter, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
