Nottingham City Council debated a motion to boycott Israel this afternoon.

The 15 minute session at around 2pm today took place after a petition signed by 5,107 people was put forward by the Palestine Solidarity Campaign.

A council spokesman said: “Under the council's procedures, a petition of 5.000 signatures triggers a debate. The petition was presented to Council and in accordance with the constitution, a 15 minute debate took place."

There was no vote at the meeting.

The debate took place despite expressed opposition to the motion from the city’s Orthodox and Liberal congregations, and from Jewish students at Nottingham University.
