A north London man has been arrested in connection with a 1993 rape and bailed pending further inquiries.

According to the Metropolitan police, a 64-year-old man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was arrested in connection with an investigation into the historic incident, which is said to have taken place in Golders Green in 1993.

The man was taken into custody at a north London police station and has since been released on bail.

In a statement, the Metropolitan police said: "We take allegations of sexual offences seriously and recognise the courage that it takes for victims to come forward.

"The matter was reported to police on 9 February and an investigation launched by detectives from the North West Command Unit.

"We would urge women who have been the subject of assault or abuse of any kind to speak to us. You will be listened to and taken seriously, your identity will be protected and specialist officers will be there to support you through the investigation and any subsequent judicial process."
