The president of Edinburgh University Students' Association has confirmed a proposed boycott of Israeli products will not be enforced.
Around 270 students at the university last week voted in favour of a motion which described Israel as an apartheid state and called for a boycott of goods.
Only 20 students voted against the motion, which also called for the association officially to join the boycott, divestment and sanctions movement against Israel.
Edinburgh University Students for Justice in Palestine group claimed the result would force both the union and the university to adopt the boycott.
But it has since emerged that the meeting was not quorate, and union president Liz Rawlings confirmed that no anti-Israel action would be taken.
She said: "It was not a quorate meeting, so it has not become policy. There is no boycott. Any group proposing such action would need to bring it to another general meeting, but as it stands there will be no boycott of Israel." EUSA is unlikely to hold another general meeting before October.
● The London School of Economics has denied claims made by its student Palestine Society that the school had agreed not to renew a contract with Eden Springs water company over its connections in Israel. Around 20 academics at LSE had also encouraged the termination of the contract.
But an LSE spokeswoman said Eden Springs would continue to be available.
