No action against Brighton lecturer

articlemain

The University of Brighton has said it will not be taking disciplinary action against lecturer Tom Hickey following his attack on Israel studies courses in the UK last week.

Mr Hickey told his audience at Sussex University’s Palestine Awareness Week that such courses were an “Israeli state propaganda initiative”, taught “to try to divert the world’s attention and alter its perception of Israel”.

A spokesperson for the University of Brighton said Mr Hickey would not be penalised for his comments as he had not broken any university rules.

He added: “Mr Hickey’s comments are his own personal views and do not represent those of the university.

“The university works with a range of organisations, including other universities within the state of Israel, to promote peace and educational development.”

Meanwhile, Sussex Friends of Israel voiced concern that Mr Hickey’s opinions were gaining momentum.

A spokesman at SFI said: “We are disturbed by the comments made by Mr Hickey.

“We are well aware that there is support for Hickey’s views. We see it first hand, week in and week out.”
