Residents of Nightingale House, the Jewish care home in south London, took advantage of the Tuesday night late opening of their Garden Cafe to create a combined submission to the My Jewish Identity project.

Eighteen residents from as far afield as Singapore, Rangoon, Johannesberg, Newcastle and Glasgow and aged from 85 to 100 shared memories and came up with, in no particular order:

Chuppah; yarmulke; community; friendship; at home all over the world; acceptance of and belief in Torah; education; mikveh; conversion; mixed marriages; “Do to others as you would have done to you”; charity; burial [in Jewish cemeteries with other Jews]; home life; family; food; can’t eat bacon; parents’ example; way of life; kosher; born Jewish; Friday nights; customs; Barmitzvah; fried fish; Passover; circumcision; cleanliness; no blood; “a code”, “a club”; and humour.

One topic was not mentioned at all, despite the fact that many residents have family there, was Israel.
