Natalie Portman went off-script when announcing the nominations for Best Director at the Golden Globes to criticise the all-male selection.
She called out the fact that all the nominees were men despite it being a year when many critically acclaimed films were directed by women.
Presenting the award, she said: "Here are the all-male nominees".
Greta Gerwig directed Lady Bird, while Patty Jenkin directed Wonder Woman, and Dee Rees’s Mudbound, none of whom were nominated.
Barbra Streisand was the last woman to win the award in 1983.
Many of the stars who attended the ceremony wore black to hightlight the issue of sexual harassment in Hollywood.
They included Jewish actresses such as Gal Gadot, Natalie Portman, Debra Messing, and Tracee Ellis Ross.
