A mother whose daughter died following an asthma attack has expressed her pride that she is "still making an impact today", thanks to a series of student awards launched in her honour.

Daniella Sciama was 18, and had just started her first year at Edinburgh University, when she suffered a fatal asthma attack in December 2013. She had spent her life battling chronic health conditions.

Her mother Michelle, from Hale, Cheshire, set out to ensure her daughter's "magic and energy" would be remembered. She has worked to increase recognition for students who have achieved success despite facing physical or emotional challenges, and Daniella's school and youth group had previously named awards after her

Edinburgh University this week presented its inaugural Daniella Sciama Award for Achievement in the Face of Adversity to Claire Clark, who suffers from Crohn's Disease and has been forced to take prolonged periods off during her studies. .

Mrs Sciama, a member of south Manchester's Shaare Hayim Sephardi Congregation, said: "Daniella's health deteriorated from the age of 14, when she developed ulcerative colitis. Consequently, she missed a lot of school, and later university.
