Nearly £11,000 has been raised after a mikveh in Greater Manchester was hit by severe flooding.
Cheadle, a village to the south-east of Manchester, was hit by a month’s rain in just 24 hours last week, causing the nearby Micker Brook tributary to burst its banks.
The mikveh, in the newly-expanded Cheadle Chabad House, was flooded, with waters rising to a few feet.
The main Chabad House building was only partially flooded.
Some nearby residents were rescued by boat, as cars were stranded, roads were closed and train services cancelled by the unprecedented summer rainfall.
Rabbi Peretz Chein, and Rebbetzin Chavi, who have run the Cheadle Chabad House for more than 20 years, have had to temporarily move out of the residence.
They said they were “devastated” by the flooding of the mikveh – the only one in the immediate area.
On their fundraising page, they said: “We now turn to you and plead! Please help us refurbish the Chabad House and make the mikveh usable again.
“Every day that the Mikveh is not open has an immediate impact.”
