A Methodist church has agreed to include statements detailing Israel’s security concerns in an exhibition it is mounting after complaints of pro-Palestinian bias.
Hinde Street Church had been criticised by the Board of Deputies and the Zionist Federation over the display – entitled “You cannot pass – Life through a dividing wall” – which features a life-size reconstruction of a checkpoint in the separation barrier between Jerusalem and Bethlehem.
Marie van der Zyl, vice-president of the Board, said the exhibition was “one-sided” and “puts unwelcome and unnecessary strain on Christian-Jewish relations”.
In response, the church agreed to include information prepared by the ZF outlining Israel’s security needs .
The Board said it was also hoping to run a panel discussion on Thursday as part of the exhibition, which would include “a range of perspectives, including a pro-Israel speaker”.
Ms van der Zyl, together with ZF chairman Paul Charney, said they hoped “to see more rigorous consultation around such sensitive events, for the sake of good interfaith relations” in the future.
They encouraged members of the community to hand out leaflets outside the church, in central London, in defence of Israel’s security measures.
They added: “We hope that the event will be conducted in a constructive spirit of genuine dialogue by organisers and visitors alike.”
