Every year 12 torches are lit on Mount Herzl in Jeruslaem to mark Israel Independence ay. For the second year in a row one of these torches will be reserved for a Diaspora Jew - and Mayim Bialik wants it to be her.
She posted on Facebook last ewek asking her followers and fans to nominate her for the "tremendous honor".
The Big Bang Theory actress and neuroscientist wrote: “You may not know this is a thing, but in Israel every year, a torch is lit on Mount Herzl for Israeli Independence Day. Apparently, nominations are “open” and I have been mentioned along with some pretty …heavy hitters lol. If you’d like to nominate me, I would appreciate that! I would be unbelievably honored to even be nominated as a candidate for this tremendous honor! ”
The Ministerial Committee for Ceremonies and Symbols launched an international campaign to select the torch lighter, asking for nominations of a Diaspora Jew who “personifies the concern and work being done for the future of the Jewish people, who reinforces the link between the world Jewry and Israel, and relates to the selected theme”, which this year is "A Legacy of Innovation”.
Other possible nominees had been named as Ivanka Trump and Alan Dershowitz.
Last year the Disapora torch was lit by two people: Michael Steinhardt, co-founder of Taglit-Birthright Israel, and Rabbi Marvin Hier, founder of the Simon Wiesenthal Center founder.
