A North London landlord has appealed against an order to pay back more than £500,000 for converting a property into flats without planning permission.

Two years ago Boruch Roth was ordered by Wood Green Crown Court to pay a confiscation sum of £527,887 or face five years in jail.

He had continued to use the flats despite an enforcement notice in 2012 to stop using them.

The council’s leader Joseph Ejiofor said in 2018 the confiscation money would be “used to further pursue landlords who think the rules don’t apply to them”.

Last Friday the Court of Appeal heard an appeal from Mr Roth against the confiscation order.
