Thomas Gardiner, Labour's former director of governance and legal affairs, has quit his job.

Mr Gardiner was widely criticised over the controversial call not to suspend former Liverpool Labour member Kayla Bibby after she posted an image of a Star of David-marked monster smothering the Statue of Liberty.

Two weeks ago, the JC revealed how Sir Keir Starmer had brought in a new ‘enforcer’ to help run Labour’s compliance unit.

It is understood that this role had been done, initially on temporary basis, by Alex Barros-Curtis, who played a leading role in Sir Keir’s leadership campaign.

Mr Gardiner and other staff members were immediately answerable to the new Acting Director of Governance and Legal.

Mr Gardiner’s previous involvement in disciplinary cases involving antisemitism is believed to have been highlighted in the Jewish Labour Movement’s submission to the Equality and Human Rights Commission.

Their report into Labour’s handling over antisemitism is expected to be delivered to the party this week.

News of Mr Gardiner’s decision to leave the role came on new General Secretary David Evans' first day at work.

A message sent to party officials confirmed Mr Gardiner has “decided to move on”.

A Lab source source told the JC that Mr Gardiner had announced his decision to quit last Friday.
