A Labour peer has been appointed to lead a fresh investigation into allegations of antisemitism at Oxford University’s Labour Club.

Baroness Janet Royall, Labour’s former leader of the House of Lords, was appointed on Friday to head a fresh investigation amid allegations of Jew-hate at the top university.

Last week, student Alex Chalmers, who is not Jewish, resigned as co-chair of the Club after he claimed his colleagues “have some kind of problem with Jews”.

Mr Chalmers said he was leaving the "poisonous" OULC after it endorsed Israel Apartheid Week.

On Friday night, the Labour Students group confirmed that it had handed over its investigation, which has not been published, to the party.

A spokesperson said: “Labour Students has completed its investigation into allegations of antisemitism at Oxford University Labour Club. We have passed the report over to the party.”

A Labour Party representative confirmed that the investigation would be led by Baroness Royall.

He said: “Allegations relating to the conduct of individual Young Labour party members have been received by the Labour Party.

“The Labour Party is now conducting an investigation. Baroness Jan Royall has been appointed to lead this investigation.”

Baroness Royall, who attended a Labour Friends of Israel delegation in 2007, her first ever visit to Israel, has previously spoken about the need to find a solution to the conflict.
