A former aide to Ed Miliband has resigned from the Labour party because it has become a “platform for antisemitism”.

Jamie Susskind, a Labour campaigner and barrister wrote an emotional resignation letter to the party yesterday.

Mr Susskind, who was deputy chair of the Society of Labour Lawyers, said he was leaving the party for the same reason he joined it, “because I’m Jewish.”

Mr Susskind said it was because of the “insults and indignities that the Jewish people have endured at the hands of the Labour party,” that the party was no longer a natural political home for him.

In the letter which he had written over a month ago, but had not sent it until now, he explained:

“I Joined Labour because I was unhappy about the state of the world and anxious to do something about it.

“The party opened up a universe of campaigns and causes, and allowed me to meet remarkable people from all over the country who shared my restless idealism.

“Labour became my political home, and for many years I loved it.”

But Mr Susskind said he could no longer belong to an institution “that has allowed itself to become the foremost platform for antisemitism in British public life.”

He said that Holocaust deniers and racists had been “embolden[ed] by the silence, and in some cases complicity of senior figures in the party.”

His letter, which he shared on Twitter was retweeted over a thousand times.
