A cross-denominational campaign started by Muslim groups to tackle extremism has received support from rabbis across the community.
The Fightback Starts Here coalition, which launched on Thursday with an open letter signed by more than 100 charities, activists and leaders from across the UK, aims to protect British children from radicalisation.
The group, started by the Leicester-based Federation of Muslim Organisations charity, has the backing of Rabbi Danny Rich - chief executive of Liberal Judaism - and Rabbi Odom Brandman of Chabad Buckhurst Hill in Essex
Progressive rabbis Richard Jacobi and David Hulbert, who are both ministers at synagogues in Essex, joined the chairs of the Leicester Hebrew Congregation and Leicester Progressive Jewish Congregation - Gary Kramer and Miriam Levene, respectively - in signing the open letter.
The families of British aid workers David Haines and Alan Henning, both murdered by Daesh, have also signed.
The letter states that its signatories will work together to win the “daily battle” against radical ideologies “by sharing our knowledge of how extremists seek to exploit young and vulnerable people, and our experiences of what works in response.”
They invite everyone to join their cause, and pledge to “meet regularly, and to agree a co-ordinated effort to protect and empower members of the communities in which we live.”
The message concludes: “We invite everyone who loves life - whether non-government, government, voluntary or private sector – to join us in shaping these solutions, because we know we face a common and determined enemy. It demands a common and determined response.
“We can – we must – win this battle together. The fightback starts here.”
