Janet Gershlick invites the nation to her Shabbas dinner

articlemain

If you are seeking inspiration for Shabbat dinner, you might want to tune in to tonight's Come Dine with Me.

Radio presenter Janet Gershlick features in the hit Channel 4 show and will be serving up a heimishe treat - a traditional Friday-night meal.

She is one of four amateur chefs hoping to be voted the best dinner party host and take away the £1,000 prize. On the menu? Challah, fried fish in matza meal with horseradish and beetroot relish - aka chrain, chicken casserole, potato kugle and halva ice cream for dessert.

Ms Gershlick, who lives in Westcliff-on-Sea, tells People: "I decided to cook foods I was familiar with. I made a traditional Jewish meal, inspired by my grandmother who was a fantastic cook.

"I seemed to spend the whole evening grating, whether it was the horseradish or the potatoes and onions."

Ms Gershlick, 46, has worked in radio for around 20 years. She used to present a show on Capital Gold. How does she do in tonight's episode? Without giving too much away she says: "My guests had never seen a challah or chrain before but they seemed to like the food. I hope the show will be funny, entertaining and also quite poignant." Either way, Ms Gershlick will be "watching from behind the television - probably screaming".
