James Esses proves that he could argue for Ireland

articlemain

Dublin schoolboy James Esses has won Ireland’s longest-running debating contest.

James, 17, is believed to be the first Jewish boy in Ireland to win the Concern All Ireland Debating Competition. Organised by charity Concern Worldwide, which supports third world countries in Africa and Asia, it has been taking place for 24 years.

James and his three team-mates emerged top against contestants from 160 schools. The motion was: “The Irish Government’s recent cut in overseas aid is misguided, irresponsible and just plain wrong.” The prize includes a trip to Kenya to visit Concern projects.

James, head boy at Sandford Park, says: “I didn’t think we would win. I did get a bit nervous at the start but once you’re up there it is fine. It’s fun proving other people wrong.” James, president of the BBYO Dublin chapter, hopes to become a barrister.
