Roman Abramovich has donated almost £4 million to the Jewish Agency in order to help fight antisemitism internationally.
The Russian billionaire oligarch’s gift is reportedly the largest ever given to the Israel-based organisation by a single donor.
Although Mr Abramovich did not comment on the donation, Isaac Herzog, chairman of the Jewish Agency, said he was “grateful for his contribution to…efforts to ensure Jews are safe in their communities around the world”.
Mr Abramovich, who is Jewish, became an Israeli citizen last year after the UK delayed renewal of his visa.
As owner of Chelsea football club, he has introduced a major campaign at the club to combat antisemitism among its own supporters, enlisting both players and Jewish fans of the club in the effort.
He has donated approximately £2 billion to charity over the years, including almost £400 million to Jewish causes.
Mr Herzog said: “Jewish communities around the world are coping with record numbers of dangerous, antisemitic attacks. I applaud Roman Abramovich for taking strong initiative to combat antisemitism.”
