An Oxford-educated British Jew has been named as a director of the Bank of Israel.

Leeds-born Andrew Abir, who now lives in Israel, was named by the bank's governor Stanley Fischer as the new director of market operations.

The 49-year-old, born Andrew Aber, also has an MBA from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He has worked at the Bank of Israel for more than 20 years in a number of roles.

He won praise for his work during the economic crisis.

Mr Fischer wished Mr Abir success and said he was confident that he could help the department to meet any challenges it faced.
