Lapid and Bennett give up on deputy prime minister role

articlemain

The final touches have been put to the new Israeli coalition as Naftali Bennett and Yair Lapid have agreed that neither will take the ceremonial title of deputy prime minister, Israel Radio has reported.

Negotiations continued throughout Thursday night after Jewish Home and Yesh Atid clashed over the role.

It is still unclear how a few final positions are to be divvied up between the two parties. Mr Bennett is expected to head the committee on market competition but it is unclear which party will take the lead on the committee on a universal draft.

The new government will most likely be sworn in on Monday.
