(JNS) Fruma Gallant, the mother of Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, died early Thursday morning aged 88.

Fruma, née Segal, was born in Poland and survived the Holocaust. She was on the “Exodus” as a child. Along with other “Exodus” refugees, the British deported her to Hamburg. She arrived in Israel in 1948 and built her life and family in the Jewish state. She was a nurse by profession.

Gallant was set to continue the management of “Operation Shield and Arrow” against Palestinian Islamic Jihad in the Gaza Strip.

“On behalf of myself, my wife, Sara, and the members of the Likud Knesset faction, I send heartfelt condolences to our friend, Minister Yoav Gallant, on the passing of his mother, Fruma,” said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

“Fruma’s inspirational story embodies the Zionist vision. She survived the horrors of the Holocaust, made the arduous journey to Israel on board the Exodus and established a splendid family; her son is the defense minister of the State of Israel. May her memory be blessing,” the prime minister said.
