The Israeli Foreign Ministry has named 100 employees of Unrwa that it believes are members of Hamas.
In a letter to Unrwa chief Philippe Lazzarini, the IDF gives 100 names which it says only represent a portion of the UN workers are members of Hamas or Palestinian Islamic Jihad. The remaining names have not been released “for reasons of confidentiality.”
According to German newspaper Bild, the list sent to Lazzarini includes the names, passport and military ID numbers of 100 suspected Hamas terrorists who are on Unrwa’s payroll – and therefore also co-financed by a number of Western nations that donated to the UN agency in Gaza, including the US and UK.
But the letter insists that there are hundreds more terrorists employed by Unrwa, including school headteachers. According to Bild, the letter calls on the agency to “immediately terminate” the named employees.
Israel has also reportedly sent the list to countries that donate to Unrwa, many of whom suspended their funding to the agency after Israel first accused Unrwa workers of being affiliated with Hamas shortly after October 7, when it emerged that 12 Unrwa employees had links to the terrorist group.
Throughout the war, Israel has voiced accusations that Hamas tunnels are routed beneath Unrwa-run schools in Gaza and has insisted that the organisation should no longer be entrusted to provide educational resources to children in the territory.
In January, Unrwa fired several employees after allegations made by the Israeli government that they were involved or knew about the October 7 Hamas attacks. Several Western nations pulled funding from the body in response.
