Former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert found himself facing a fourth indictment last Thursday to the three for which he is already on trial.

Mr Olmert - together with a long list of former senior officials in Jerusalem City Hall and real-estate developers - was accused in the Jerusalem District Court of involvement in the Holyland bribery case.

According to the charge-sheet, while serving as Jerusalem mayor, Mr Olmert received NIS 1.5 million (£250,000) from the developers of the Holyland project in north-west Jerusalem in exchange for building rights.

In addition, Mr Olmert's successor as mayor, Uri Lupolianski, and two current city councillors, deputy mayor Eli Simhayoff and Avraham Feiner, were indicted for alleged bribe-taking.

Alongside them, former Jerusalem chief engineer, Uri Shitrit; Mr Olmert's long-serving secretary Shula Zaken; and a number of leading businessmen were also indicted.

Former mayor Lupolianski is alleged to have received NIS 2.74 million (£460,000) in the form of donations to Yad Sarah, the medical equipment loan charity that he founded.

The indictments cover two other corruption cases in which developers are being accused of bribing the former head of the Israel Land Authority, Yaakov Efrati, in order to build on various plots around Israel.
