Thousands of Hezbollah fighters have been targeted in a complex cyber attack across Lebanon, causing pagers to simultaneously explode in pockets across the country.

A Hezbollah official told Reuters that the incident constituted their "biggest security breach yet" as Lebanese officials said that more than 2700 people were injured in the attacks, with as many as 200 in serious condition in hospital.

A journalist for the news agency saw Hezbollah terrorists bleeding from wounds in the southern suburb of Beirut, which is the primary stronghold of Hezbollah.

Hundreds of similar incidents were reported, with a Lebanese security source telling Al Jazeera that explosions weren’t limited to Beirut and took place across Lebanon, including in the Beqaa Valley and the south of the country.

Lebanese media affiliated with Hezbollah attributed the incident to the IDF and claimed that the mysterious explosions were caused as a result of a hack of the terrorist group’s internal communications networks.

The unusual security incident has resulted in its commanders sending out instructions to members to throw away their pagers according to reports.

The IDF did not comment on the incident, which came just hours after the Israeli cabinet added the return of citizens displaced from their homes in northern Israel to the country’s war goals, bringing a potential major confrontation with Hezbollah closer to reality.

The Times of Israel report that Iran’s Ambassador to Lebanon, Mojtaba Amani, is among those to be injured in a detonation.

According to Israeli media reports, the heads of the country’s security agencies, including Mossad chief David Barnea, convened on Tuesday afternoon for “frantic” talks regarding the threat posed by Hezbollah.
