London Mayor Boris Johnson will take part in a kick-about with young Arabs and Israelis, meet former president Shimon Peres and visit Yad Vashem in a visit to Israel and the Palestinian territories next week .

During the three-day trade mission, starting on Monday, Mr Johnson will visit Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and Ramallah.

While in Jerusalem, the Mayor will take part in a football training session with a group of young Jewish and Arab footballers who are part of a programme supported by the British Embassy. He is also due to deliver a lecture in memory of Winston Churchill.

The Mayor will attend events at Tel Aviv Stock Exchange and Tel Aviv University in a bid to build on the business links with Israel that saw more Israeli firms go public on the London Stock Exchange last year than any other country outside the UK. Imports and exports between the Palestinian territories and the UK have also increased in the past year.

The Mayor said: “We’re heading to a region with enormous potential for stronger links with London. This visit will be a fantastic opportunity to explore the possibilities of building the long-term relationships and partnerships that will create opportunities for our businesses to prosper.”

While in Tel Aviv, Mr Johnson will also meet Mayor Ron Huldai.

In Ramallah, he will attend an event with the Palestinian Business Women’s Forum and meet the first Palestinian female Governor in the region, Dr Leila Ghannam, who is the Governor of Ramallah and Al Bireh, plus other senior politicians.

He is expected to view a demonstration of pioneering cyclist and pedestrian detection technology developed in Jerusalem by an Israeli company but now being used to help improve safety in London.
