Controversial Islamic cleric Raed Salah has been jailed for eight months in Israel for inciting violence.

Sheikh Salah, the leader of the northern branch of the Islamic Movement in Israel, incited Muslims to start a new intifada during a 2007 sermon.

He was arrested last September by Israeli police and convicted of incitement in November. Magistrates in Jerusalem also handed him a further eight-month term, suspended for three years.

Salah's sermon was made during a demonstration against Israeli construction work near the Al-Aqsa mosque, and led to his supporters clashing with Israeli police.
