President Biden is expected to sign an executive order today allowing the US to impose new sanctions on Israeli settlers – and potentially Israeli politicians and government officials – involved in violent attacks against Palestinians, two US officials have told news website Axios.

The Biden administration is also reportedly considering a plan to unilaterally recognise a Palestinian state, despite deep opposition to the move within Israel.

Both Axios and The New York Times reported on Wednesday about this potential major shift in the American approach towards Palestinian statehood, which hitherto has emphasized direct negotiations between Jerusalem and Ramallah.

According to Axios, which cites two US officials familiar with the situation, Secretary of State Antony Blinken has requested a review of policy options for the recognition of a Palestinian state after Israel's war against Hamas in Gaza concludes.
